Dental Insurance Information
More about dental insurance
Some dental insurance policies are excellent, others are fair, and still others are poor policies that cover only a small portion of treatment costs. Our practice, Judy L. Husen, DDS, has patients that fall into all three of these categories and some that do not have insurance at all.
Insurance plans base their payments on what they consider a usual and customary fee. In our area, these usual and customary fees often fall short of the actual costs and fees charged. We realize that every bit of help you receive from your insurance company matters, and we’re glad for any patient that has coverage. However, it is important to understand that the amount your policy covers has already been determined by the coverage for which you and your employer have paid. Generally, the lower your premium costs, the less coverage you'll receive.
The experience of many dentists has been that some insurance companies tell their customers that the "fees charged are above the usual and customary" rather than saying "our benefits are low."
Your insurance company sets the "allowable" or "usual and customary fees" depending on how much was paid for your policy. This is similar to your car insurance. The lower the benefits you choose, the less it costs you in premiums.
Many necessary routine dental services may not be covered by dental insurance.
What is covered and what is not will be determined by the benefits your employer or you have purchased. Our fees at Judy L. Husen, DDS are based on the experience we have in performing each procedure and the quality of the laboratories and materials we use. We will not compromise your treatment and, ultimately, your well-being in order to accommodate an insurance policy's restrictions, which may prevent you from getting the quality of care that you deserve. We are more than happy to discuss a treatment plan's advantages and disadvantages with you, or alternative treatment plans, and help you choose what type of treatment is best for you. The type of treatment we recommend is based upon our professional judgment, not on whether you’re covered by a dental benefits plan. We strongly feel that you, not your insurance company, should choose the treatment you feel is best.
At Judy L. Husen, DDS, we’ll help you in any way we can to file your claims and handle your insurance questions.
No question is too small, whether it's about your treatment, benefits plan, or statement. We're here to help you!
